My understanding is that Larry Johnson learned that the Iranians had ACQUIRED at least one (and probably several) nuclear devices.
Presumably, they came from either North Korea or Pakistan.
Larry’s expectation was that we may soon see a nuclear weapon tested in some remote region of Iran to show the world that Iran is now a nuclear-armed power.
In addition, the Iranians seek to communicate to Israel that any further campaigns of military conquest (e.g. Lebanon) will be met with a nuclear response.

It should be noted that Mearsheimer is not denying the logic of Iran obtaining nuclear weapons. Him and others like Robert Pape have said they expect Iran to do this as soon as possible. I think Mearsheimer is skeptical about how the story in the report about how this has come about -- namely that another state has provided crucial assistance in this regard.
I've heard from experts like Ted Postol that Iran already has the know-how to develop a nuclear weapon. The tech from the 1940s is not difficult to replicate for Iran and a crude tactical nuke will not need miniaturization. Indeed Iran's AMAN program from <2003 was a feasibility study of constructing a nuclear weapon.
Needless to say this is all hypothetical and none of these people have sources within Iran that could confirm/deny these.
This sounds very much like the story reported as fact during the Bush administration that Saddam Hussein had “weapons of mass destruction”. Later, after the Iraq war had begun, it was proven wrong, totally made up to justify the war. Oil was always the motivation. Only after 10 years of fighting did the truth about Afghanistan become known and another war to be lost began.
Reporting unconfirmed “maybe’s”, especially around nuclear weapons, needs to be handled very carefully or more decade-long wars will happen. Not what the world needs and definitely not what people need to worry about with everything else already happening.
