As many others smarter than me have pointed out: economics more than anything drive regimes of all sorts. China does not want a trade war against the US. However, it is true that China is slowly restricting certain exports (critical minerals), and imports (plastic for recycling or dumping).
That very well may happen, or we may find that the attempt of a global dictatorial axis is underway (i.e., Russia will overtake Europe, China will overtake all of Asia and Australia and the US overtakes the Americas). Africa is the question mark.
Thank you for describing the detailed history that lead to this horrible culmination. Yet another blatant imperialist action and violation of a sovereign nation's dignity to acquire resources and force regime change, and it couldn't have happened without the contributions of previous presidents towards this objective.

That said, Chavez failed to further diversify Venezuela's economy before his death, or better train more Venezuelans in the work of extracting heavy oil and refining it. And, Maduro failed even more. It would have been harder after the sanctions started, but could have been begun.

I agree w/ the view of it as the fruit of a long-term neocon plan to crush Chavismo--which sought to free the country from US economic control & redistribute wealth-& bring the oil-rich country back into the US orbit (& away from China's).
Even as Canadians, it’s difficult not to feel a warm, vicarious pride in all the winning our American neighbours managed to rack up—watching, from a safe distance, as President Trump, acting conspicuously in alignment with Israeli strategic interests, allegedly green-lit the CIA to remind the world that national sovereignty is less a rule than a flexible suggestion.
In one decisive flourish, a foreign president and his wife were removed for safekeeping, a regime change pencilled neatly into the schedule, and an oil-rich nation’s resources politely earmarked for redistribution under a more agreeable leadership—one reliably aligned with U.S. and Israeli regional priorities.
The $1 billion cost of the operation, of course, will be graciously covered by American taxpayers. A trivial inconvenience, really—especially in a country that somehow never seems to have that same $1 billion available for healthcare, education, or addressing domestic crises. But priorities must be respected.
More impressive still is the efficiency of it all: a government that can bypass Congress to apprehend a foreign head of state halfway across the globe, yet remains curiously powerless to pursue well-documented figures on the Epstein list at home. Sovereignty abroad, paralysis at home—a truly remarkable balance.
And how comforting it is to know the estimated $17 trillion in newly liberated oil wealth will be shared so equitably with the public—by which we naturally mean the billionaires, who will now enjoy the rare honour of graduating into the exalted ranks of multi-billionaires.
Yes. The winning. So much winning. One almost forgets to ask who’s paying for it—and who’s cashing in.

Is it ok for China and Russia, and Iran to have a military presence in our hemisphere? Trump just said no.

You're missing a couple of angles, though.
- The Israel thing (Maduro is openly pro-Palestinian, Machado signed an agreement with Likud in 2020)
- the Crypto thing too (Machado has pushed for a Bitcoin Reserve)
This is much more than just the oil.
If it were just the oil, there would be people to stand in the way.
But too many people get rich off this for anyone in power to risk everything to stop it.
Sadly, this is largely bipartisan but nobody will point that out either.
