EU nominates far-right murderous dictator Jeanine Anez for "human rights award"
EU nominates fascist dictator for human rights award.
The Sakharov Prize is an EU prize that supposedly is given to figures who defend human rights and freedom of thought. But this year’s nominees show it is just a front for empire. The first nominee is jailed, Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny who Russian leftist Alexey Sakhnin writing for Jacobin magazine exposed as a far-right anti-immigrant nationalist willing to throw leftist under the bus to gain support from the Russian elite. The second nominee is a group of women from Afghanistan. While no doubt it’s true there are no Women’s rights under the Taliban, the focus on this issue is a clear push to get America to get re-involved in Afghanistan. Wikileaks exposed through leaked documents that the C.I.A. intentionally used feminism to reduce opposition to the war in Afghanistan. But these two nominees while subtly pushing a regime change narrative would not warrent me writing an article about it. The third nominee Jeanie Anez does.
On November 10th, 2019 Leftist Bolivian President Evo Morales was deposed in a military coup over false claims of election fraud. Morales was replaced by Anez a far-right politician from the rich, European, Christian region of the country. Not only was Anez not elected but she had never even run for president. Anez had a history of disturbingly racist social media posts such as a tweet where she refers to Bolvia’s indigenous Aymara population who Morales was one of as “satanic” and a 2019 tweet where she referred to Morales as a “poor indian”. After Anez gained power through the coup many of Morales supporters protested. This resulted in two massacres of protestors by the Anez regime one in the City Sacaba and another area Senkata. The two massacres resulted in 20 protestors being killed and 70 being wounded. Following this massacre witnesses were threatened and evidence was destroyed. The Anez regime also cracked down on leftist media by censoring outlets from the airwaves and threatening to prosecute outlets she deemed “troublesome”. Anez was also responsible for arresting 1500 political prisoners. Finally when an election was eventually held the Anez administration detained election monitors and doxxed supervisors.
Yet, the ECR group, the group within the EU that nominated Anez failed to mention any of this in their video. The video does however mention Anez’s imprisonment and tries to portray her as a political prisoner. This is a claim that is often repeated by the mainstream media and “human rights” NGOs as well. Outlets like The Guardian ran headlines like “Bolivia's ex-interim president arrested in opposition crackdown”, NGOs like Human Rights Watch put out statements like “Bolivia Should End Revenge Justice”. The truth is Anez was charged for her killing of peaceful protesters she is in no way a victim or political prisoner.
The fact that an award that supposedly honors human rights and freedom of thought is nominating a woman who killed peaceful protestors, cracked down on media, and jailed dissidents are beyond absurd. But aside from the absurdity, it is an insult to the families of the victims killed in Anez’s massacre. It is absolutely discussing that the EU would prop up this fascist murderer as a champion of human rights.
Great insight. Thanks!
